Senior Student

Senior Student: Ananya Nair (Prabhullan)

The Senior Student is the head of the JCR (Junior Common Room) and has three main duties – first, they lead and support the Executive Committee, the student group that is responsible for the day-to-day running of all parts of the JCR. Secondly, the Senior Student represents the undergraduate body of Castle within University College to groups such as the MCR (Middle Common Room – Masters and PhD students), the SCR (fellows of the college), College Office, College Council or Durham Castle Society.

Thirdly and finally, the Senior Student ensures that the views of the JCR are heard by the Durham Students’ Union and the University, as well as being the face of the JCR to those outside the Durham University community.

Hi I’m Ananya, I’m in my final year studying Law and I am honoured to be your senior student this year. My role includes overseeing the entire JCR, leading the JCR exec, and also acting as a liaison officer between our student body and college office. I am so excited to meet you all and can’t wait to show you everything that Castle has to offer, after all it is the best college! Outside of Durham I am from Mumbai in India. To wind down I like reading, writing or lifting. Also despite never planning on going out I always do seem to find myself in the Undie followed by Jimmies. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any queries or concerns, I will be happy to help. Floreat Castellum!

Favourite Castle memories: Meeting some of my best friends in the world at Castle! Every ball and Castle event I’ve attended has been incredible. Another favourite memory is breaking my chin tripping outside Stanton’s after my best friend got a concussion [she needed 4 staples that night]. My happiest memory definitely has to be getting the opportunity to be your Senior Student.
