Ball Committee
What does the committee do?
Castle hosts three celebrated balls each year: Ladies Night in Michaelmas, Halfway Hall during Epiphany, and the June Ball in Easter Term. The ball committee consists of over 50 students who attend weekly meetings and are responsible for different aspects of the ball preparation. There are many departments in the committee to get involved in, ranging from marketing to sponsorship, food to music, and admin to graphics. Students can apply for a variety of roles, including directors, coordinators, and assistants, depending on their experience, interest, and how much time they are able to offer.
Involvement in the ball committee is not only enormous fun, providing those working on these exciting events with a great sense of achievement, but also offers the opportunity to socialize across other years within the college. The skills that you can attain are valuable, sought after by graduate employers, and great for your CV. As a ball committee member, you have priority to get paid work at the events themselves and other perks, including higher priority for tickets, committee discounts, ball committee stash, ball committee socials, and the potential to attend formals for free as the guest of the ball chair.
How can I get involved?
Recruitment for the University College Ball Committee gets started early in Michaelmas Term. Applications are open to all members of Castle. We are always keen to get freshers involved and many of the roles require NO prior experience. All successful applicants are given permanent positions on the committee for that academic year. Those applying for assistant positions are assessed through written application. However, those applying for director, secretary, treasurer or co-ordinator roles are required to fill out a written application after which they may be invited to interview.
With many positions available, those who are unsuccessful in their original position application may still be offered an alternative. All committee members are expected to attend the weekly meetings on a Wednesday afternoon.
The June Ball has been featured in MasterCard's 'Top Events Money Can't Buy' and The Guardian's 'Top 100 things to do before you die' (https://thejuneball.co.uk/). This flagship event has its very own committee consisting of the University College ball committee plus additional roles, reflecting the size of the event. Applications for The June Ball Committee will open at the end of Epiphany term however, invested ball committee members are not required to reapply for their roles.
Look out for the Recruitment Handbook that will be posted on The Castle Freshers Facebook Page in Michaelmas (week 1) - I look forward to reading all your applications!
